Coexistence Between Humans and Wolves – How It’s Done in Sweden
A workshop on managing wolves near populated areas and human activities was held in Sweden from May 21 to 23, 2024. The event took place at the Grimsö Wildlife Research Station, part of the Department of Ecology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Around 30 participants attended through the LIFE Wild Wolf project, providing an opportunity to exchange practical experiences aimed at fostering better coexistence between humans and wildlife, specifically wolves.
The goals of the workshop included familiarizing participants with protocols for interventions related to wolves near human settlements and activities, informing them about currently available evidence on interventions involving wolves in proximity to human activities, as well as addressing interventions related to human fear of large carnivores. Participants also received training on the practical use of tools for damage prevention and interventions, such as aversive conditioning, sound deterrent devices, electric fences, and more.
