Parnitha National Park: Successful Meetings on Human-Wolf Coexistence

On September 13 and 14, 2024, two significant events focusing on human-wolf coexistence were organized by the Management Body of Parnitha National Park and the Management Body of Schinias-Marathon, Hymettus & Southeastern Attica (NECCA), in collaboration with the environmental organization Callisto. These meetings, held under the framework of the European LIFE WILD WOLF project, aimed to strengthen the operational capacity of relevant authorities to manage and prevent conflicts related to wolves while informing and engaging the local community.

Human-Wolf Coexistence Platform Session
The second session of the Human-Wolf Coexistence Platform took place on Friday, September 13, 2024, at the Old Town Hall of Fyli ("Nikos Liakos" Town Hall, Fyli Square, Fyli Ave, Chasia). Public Event: "Myths and Realities about Wolves"
On Saturday, September 14, 2024, a public event was held at the Mountaineering Association of Acharnes Athletic Center. The event attracted a large and engaged audience and featured insightful presentations by experts:

  • Dr. Giorgos Chatzinakos (Callisto): Contribution of the LIFE WILD WOLF project to improving human-wolf coexistence in Parnitha National Park.

  • Elektra Lazar (Anthropologist and Author): Analysis of how the image of wolves has been shaped through literature and cultural texts.

  • Dr. Dimitris Borboudakis (Callisto): Examination of the portrayal of wolves in media.

  • Volunteers from EDASA: Guidance on mobilizing residents for voluntary fire watch, firefighting, and reforestation efforts.

Both events provided a platform for meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and community engagement, surpassing all expectations.

About the Human-Wolf Coexistence Platform

The Human-Wolf Coexistence Platform, established within the framework of the LIFE WILD WOLF project, serves as a consultation body where stakeholders discuss issues related to wolf presence in Parnitha. Members are regularly informed about project progress and provide recommendations on actions and the adoption of best practices.

Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this essential effort, and special thanks to the Municipality of Fyli, EOS Acharnon, and the EDASA volunteers for their valuable support.
