LIFE WILD WOLF Launches Hunting Dog Protection Trials in Lazio, Italy

New field trials in the Lazio region of Italy are testing innovative protective equipment designed to reduce injuries to hunting dogs during encounters with wolves, contributing to safer hunting practices and improved human–wolf coexistence.

The LIFE WILD WOLF project has launched a new series of field trials in Lazio, Italy, to evaluate the effectiveness of protective vests designed to reduce injuries to hunting dogs during encounters with wolves.

The initiative brings together local hunters, the Istituto di Ecologia Applicata (IEA), the European Federation for Hunting and Conservation (FACE), and DOGTECH, combining scientific expertise, technological innovation, and practical field experience to develop effective prevention measures.

Testing Protective Equipment in Real Hunting Conditions

The trials are taking place in Lazio, a region characterised by dense vegetation, rugged terrain, and established hunting traditions. These conditions make it a valuable testing ground for protective equipment that could also be used in other areas of southern Europe where wolves and hunting activities overlap.

During the launch event, participating hunting dogs were equipped with specially developed protective vests. Hunters were introduced to the equipment and the objectives of the trials, while sharing their experiences and discussing practical approaches to reducing risks during hunting activities.

The field trials will assess several important aspects of the protective equipment, including:

  • Safety: The potential of the vests to reduce injuries during wolf encounters.

  • Mobility: Whether the equipment allows dogs to move freely across challenging terrain.

  • Endurance: How the vests affect dogs during prolonged hunting activities.

  • Practicality and durability: How well the equipment performs under regular field conditions.

Hunters Play a Central Role in Evaluating Prevention Measures

A key element of the initiative is the active involvement of hunters, whose practical knowledge of hunting conditions, dog behaviour, and local wildlife provides valuable insights into the performance of the equipment.

Throughout the upcoming hunting season, participating dog owners will use the protective vests during their regular hunting activities and provide feedback on their effectiveness, durability, and usability.

This information will help project partners assess the equipment under real-world conditions and identify potential improvements.

Supporting Practical Solutions for Human–Wolf Coexistence

Encounters between wolves and hunting dogs can create challenges in areas where wolf territories overlap with hunting activities. Developing and evaluating effective prevention measures is therefore an important part of reducing conflicts and supporting coexistence.

Through these trials, LIFE WILD WOLF aims to identify practical, evidence-based solutions that can improve hunting dog safety while contributing to wolf conservation.

The experience gained in Lazio will support the development of future recommendations and best practices that could be applied in other European regions facing similar challenges.

By working directly with hunters and testing innovative solutions in the field, LIFE WILD WOLF continues to demonstrate the importance of cooperation, prevention, and shared knowledge in building a future where people, their animals, and wolves can coexist.
