Final Field Season of the LIFE Wild Wolf Project in Croatia

The team from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine launched the final field season of the LIFE Wild Wolf (LWW) project in April 2026, focusing on capturing and fitting wolves with GPS collars in Šibenik-Knin and Zadar counties.

The aim is to better understand the spatial and temporal movements of wolves, particularly near settlements and in areas with high levels of livestock damage. The data collected will support the development of more effective livestock husbandry practices and contribute to reducing human–wolf conflicts.

This work is carried out in collaboration with the Croatian Hunting Association and county-level hunting associations in Dalmatia, with the support of local hunting clubs and Krka National Park.

Field activities include searching for signs of wolf presence, such as scats, tracks, and scratch marks, analysing camera trap data, and gathering information from local communities on recent observations or damage. Based on this information, traps equipped with alarm systems are carefully placed. When triggered, the team responds immediately to ensure the animal is processed efficiently and released as quickly as possible after fitting the GPS collar and collecting samples and measurements.

Stay tuned for updates from this field season. Observations of wolves, including date, time, and location, can be shared at monitoring@hls.com.hr.
