Wolves on Pohorje (Slovenia) - how did we protect the sheep?
In recent years, wolves have been sporadically present in the Pohorje area, but now it seems that a pack has been established. In November 2024, professional hunters from the Slovenia Forest Service filmed a pack of wolves with camera traps in the Pohorje State Managed Hunting Ground (LPN).
Slovenia Forest Service has encouraged breeders to protect their animals as a precaution and a local sheep farmer from the Vuzenica area has responded. We presented him with effective preventive measures, among which high electric nettings are key. The breeder opted for this solution and we advised and helped him to set up an intervention kit to help prevent conflicts with wolves in the area. The result? The sheep are now protected, and potential conflicts are prevented!
For many years, the Slovenia Forest Service has been looking for solutions and promoting measures to help livestock keepers prevent attacks by carnivores on domestic animals. In addition to high-mounted electric nets, livestock guarding dogs have proven to be the most effective.
By taking a responsible approach, we can coexist with large carnivores while protecting grazing animals.
